UEFA Men’s Player of the Year: UEFA announced their top three nominees for the 2022-23 Men’s Player of the Year award on Thursday. Lionel Messi, Erling Haaland, and Kevin de Bruyne are the leading contenders.
Argentina’s Lionel Messi, who formerly played for Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) before joining Inter Miami, has had an outstanding season. He played a key role in Argentina’s win at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, demonstrating both his remarkable skill and leadership.
The winner of this prestigious prize will be announced on August 31 at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco during the 2023-24 UEFA Champions League group stage draw event. Ilkay Gundogan, Rodri, Kylian Mbappe, Luka Modric, Marcelo Brozovic, Declan Rice, Alexis Mac Allister, and Jesus Navas were also nominated.
The shortlist was meticulously selected, with the UEFA technical study group shortlisting individuals based on their performances during the 2022-23 season, both at the club and national team levels.
The top three were then chosen by a jury comprised of the coaches of the clubs that competed in the group stages of the 2022-23 UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, and UEFA Europa Conference League, as well as the coaches of the national teams of UEFA’s member associations. The jury also includes a select group of journalists from the European Sports Media.
The jury was asked to provide points to their top three players, with the winner being the person with the most points. To ensure objectivity, the jury was not allowed to vote for players from their own teams.
