Former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Mehbooba Mufti, clarified on a social media platform that her elder daughter, Irtika Mufti, did not participate in the movie Omkara. This isn’t a novel assertion about Mufti’s daughter and is just one of many claims circulating about her daughters on social media. Mehbooba Mufti took to Twitter, now known as X, to express her pride in her brother Tassaduq’s contribution to Omkara’s production and to refute the unfounded claim that her older daughter was involved, labeling the social media user Imtiaz Mahmood as a ‘two rupee troll’.
The original post criticized Mufti for her daughters’ purportedly ‘non-Islamic’ lifestyles, contrasting them with her supposed desire for all Kashmiri girls to adhere to wearing burqas. Accompanied by two pictures, the post stated: “These are the 2 daughters of Mehbooba Mufti. Irtika and Iltiza Mufti. One became IFD via backdoor and now working in London. 2nd acts in Bollywood, she was seen in Omkara movie. Both lives normal Non Islamic Life but Mehbooba Mufti wants all Kashmiri Girls to live in Burqa.”
Mehbooba Mufti responded, dismissing the claims propagated by so-called ‘two rupee trolls’. She clarified that her younger daughter, Iltija, who was said to be working as an ‘IFS’ officer in London, had been in Kashmir since 2015. She also debunked the false assertion that her older daughter was involved in Omkara and expressed her pride in her brother’s work on the film.
Iltija Mufti gained prominence in J&K politics during her mother’s detention in 2019 before Article 370 was revoked. Mehbooba Mufti, the first female chief minister of J&K, was released after more than 14 months. During her mother’s detainment, Iltija managed her social media accounts.
Iltija recently made headlines due to her legal efforts to obtain a regular passport, replacing her UAE-specific passport, which had been issued for her higher studies in the UAE. The UAE-specific passport was valid from April 5, 2023, to April 4, 2025. Her request for a regular passport was granted two days prior.
Irtiqa Javid, Mehbooba’s other daughter, received training as a screenwriter. Mehbooba’s brother, Tassaduq Hussain Mufti, worked as a cinematographer in Omkara and Kaminey. He later served as the tourism minister of the former J&K between 2017 and 2018.
