Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has announced an emergency scheme to provide every primary school kid with free meals for the next academic year in London. This £130 million pounds pilot scheme, which will begin from September, will run for a year.
The scheme will give some respite to 2,70,000 children out of 4 million who are struggling with food insecurity in Britain. “The cost of living is going up, so anything from the government is a helping hand. Technically, Britain is under recession and anything that cuts overheads is welcome,” said Suhas Barhate, an IT professional with two children.
His wife Rupali, who started a dosa, idli batter business during Covid, pointed out that their two children, one in secondary school and the other in infant school, couldn’t benefit from it.
She further said, “The cost of living crisis is here to stay, so it’s disappointing that the scheme is there for a year.”
