The funeral procession for former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh began from the Congress headquarters on Saturday after several leaders paid their last respects to the architect of India’s economic liberalisation. Singh will be cremated with full state honours at Nigambodh Ghat in the national capital, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi expected to attend the last rites.
Singh’s body was brought to the Congress headquarters earlier in the day. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, former party chief Sonia Gandhi, senior leaders Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and KC Venugopal paid their tributes to the two-time PM on Saturday. Meanwhile, the Centre agreed to allocate space for a memorial of the former Prime Minister after a war of words broke out between the BJP and the Congress. Kharge had written to the Prime Minister and Home Minister, requesting that Singh’s last rites be performed at a place where a memorial could be built for him.
