A former employee of LinkedIn, who was among the 716 individuals laid off by the job-search platform in May, expressed surprise at experiencing a layoff firsthand. The ex-staffer, whose identity remains undisclosed, shared on the Microsoft-owned platform that he used to perceive layoffs as something confined to movies or vague Twitter posts.
“I never thought I would be the one getting laid off. Layoffs always seemed like something you only encountered on social media or in movies,” the unnamed individual wrote, as reported by India Today.
“Yet, here I am. Today marks my final day at LinkedIn. A week ago, I received the official announcement that I was among the 700+ employees affected by the layoffs,” the former employee added.
The individual went on to describe the emotional journey, emphasizing their commitment to always bringing their best self to work.
“It has been an absolute rollercoaster ride. Witnessing my efforts and exciting plans crumble, with no control over the situation, felt surreal. Nevertheless, I remain optimistic and find solace in the uncertainty. Ultimately, I have given my utmost and can only look forward to what lies ahead,” they expressed.
Concluding the post, the ex-employee mentioned their active pursuit of the next job opportunity.
LinkedIn’s decision to downsize its sales, operations, and support teams was announced on May 9. The layoffs were part of broader changes that also involved discontinuing the company’s jobs app in China.
This marked the second wave of layoffs at LinkedIn in 2023. The first occurred in February, aligning with Microsoft’s broader initiative to reduce its workforce by 10,000 employees, approximately 5% of its total workforce at the time.
