Urge the central government to reconsider the proposal and adopt measures that prioritize economic recovery
Kashmir Traders and Manufacturers Federation (KTMF) has strongly condemned the proposed hike of Goods and Services Tax (GST) on certain traditional Kashmiri products, which are central to the J&K’s economy and cultural heritage.
KTMF President Mohammad Yaseen Khan expressed grave concern about the potential impact of this move, stating, “these products are the lifeline of Kashmir’s economy and cultural identity. The hike of GST will burden local artisans and traders, threatening their livelihoods and diminishing the appeal of Kashmiri products in competitive markets.”
Khan underscored the historical significance of tax exemptions for Kashmiri crafts such as Pashmina shawls, paper-machie items, walnut wood carvings and saffron which have supported the preservation of these trades. He criticized the government for proposing higher taxes at a time of economic fragility marked by inflation and stagnant growth. KTMF recently suggested reducing GST on essential items to provide much-needed relief to traders and consumers. “Instead, the introduction of higher taxes reflects a concerning disconnect from the Kashmir’s economic realities”.
Khan has called upon Lieutenant Governor Shri Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to intervene and advocate for the tax exemptions on Kashmiri products. “We urge the central government to reconsider the proposal and adopt measures that prioritize economic recovery and cultural preservation”, Khan added.
