This was announced by India’s head coach Rahul Dravid on Tuesday, August 29. In advance of their first game against Pakistan on September 2, Dravid stated that KL Rahul will not be traveling to Sri Lanka with the rest of the team.
The opening match of the 2023 Asia Cup will take place on August 30 in Multan between Pakistan and Nepal. On September 2, Pakistan will be the opponent for India’s first match at Pallekele, and on September 4, Nepal will be the opponent.
Dravid stated on August 29 during a news conference in Bengaluru. “So giving clarity on KL Rahul. He has had a really good week with us here. He has done training and is progressing really well on the route that we want to take. But he will be unavailable for the first part, for the Kandy leg of the tournament,”
On August 30, India is scheduled to leave for Sri Lanka. Dravid confirmed that the wicketkeeper-batter will not be traveling with the team and that the National Cricket Academy fitness team will assess Rahul on September 4 before making a decision regarding his participation in the Super 4 stages of the competition.
“The NCA will be looking after him while we are traveling. We will re-assess on the 4th and take it from there. But the signs are really good. He will be unavailable for the first 2 games. But we will re-assess on the 4th and take it from there,” Dravid added.
Dravid also reaffirmed that KL Rahul has been batting really well at the nets and that the decision to travel without him to the Asia Cup was based on caution.
“We are hoping that it should be only two games that he is missing. I am not worried about it. Him and Shreyas are experienced players. I expect KL Rahul to be available for the Colombo leg (of Asia Cup),” Dravid added.
