In a controversial statement made amid rising tensions with India, Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif referred to madrassa students as the country’s “second line of defence”, suggesting they could be mobilized in support of the armed forces if the situation escalates further.

Addressing Pakistan’s National Assembly, Asif said that the seminaries and their students could be “activated when needed,” indicating the government’s willingness to draw upon religious institutions in a national security context. This declaration has sparked significant concern both within Pakistan and internationally, raising questions about the potential militarization of religious education.

Critics argue that such remarks risk blurring the lines between civilian religious education and armed conflict, especially given the past allegations that some madrassas in Pakistan have been linked to extremist networks. Many fear this could deepen radicalization and undermine regional peace efforts.

This statement comes just days after heightened military activity between India and Pakistan, including India’s retaliatory strikes under Operation Sindoor and Pakistan’s failed drone and missile attacks on Indian territory.

India has not officially responded to Asif’s statement, but strategic analysts view the comment as a sign of growing desperation and a possible attempt to signal ideological mobilization alongside conventional military tactics.

As the situation continues to unfold, the international community is urging both nations to avoid further escalation and return to the path of diplomacy.
