The police of Karnal, Kaithal and Kurukshetra traced a parcel containing jewellery worth around Rs 1.5 crore, which was stolen from a Himachal Road Transport Corporation bus when it halted at a dhaba near Nilokheri on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday.

A Himachal Roadways bus had taken halt at a dhaba near Nilokheri on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday when the parcel containing the jewellery was stolen from the vehicle.

The recovery was made possible due to the GPS tracker in the parcel of the courier company. The bus was bound for Chandigarh from Delhi. The police recovered the car used by the accused in the crime.

Fearing arrest near the Chandlana toll tax in Kaithal district, the three accused managed to escape from the crime scene after leaving the car there. However, they took out some jewellery from the parcel, which was currently being assessed, said the police.

Preliminary investigations suggested that information regarding the parcel might have been leaked either by somebody in the courier company or at the dispatch location.

Two employees of the courier company, Prem and Dharmendra, had left Delhi for Chandigarh in the bus to hand over the parcel. The incident took place around 1 am when the bus stopped for some time at Mayur Vatika dhaba near Nilokheri. Both employees went to washroom, leaving the parcel in the bus. They found the parcel missing when they returned after some time, said Jagdish Pandey, SHO, Butana police station.

The police started locating the accused with the help of the GPS. The Kaithal and Kurukshetra teams also assisted the Karnal police in tracing the stolen jewellery and helped in tracing the car used in the crime. It took around two hours for the police to trace the parcel.

Shashank Kumar Sawan, SP, said they had identified the accused. “We have registered a case and an inquiry is on to find out who leaked the information regarding the parcel,” said the SP.
