In a significant development on counter-insurgency front, an Indian Army officer of High Altitude Warfare School has been appointed as SSP Training and Special Operations in Jammu and Kashmir Police (JKP). with immediate effect.
This is apparently for the first time that an Army Officer is being engaged for training and special operations in J&K Police, which has been taking on terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir for the last more than three decades.
Colonel Vikrant Prasher of Para, High Altitude Warfare School (HAWS), Gulmarg, has been engaged as SSP (Training & Special Operations in J&K Police on deputation basis, with immediate effect.
Order in this regard was issued today by the Home Department, J&K Government, according to which, sanction has been accorded to the appointment of Colonel Vikrant Prasher from India Army for two years from the date of his joining as SSP Training and Special Operations in J&K Police.
The first ever appointment of an Army Officer as SSP in J&K Police for training and special operations assumes high significance and speaks of new pro-active approach on counter-insurgency front amid change of guard in J&K Police after next three days.
Pertinent to mention that Nalin Prabhat, an IPS officer of Andhra Pradesh Cadre and recently posted as Special DG (Operations & Security), JKP, is all set to assume the charge of Director General of J&K Police from October 1, 2024. Before his deputation to J&K, he was Director General of the National Security Guard from May 1, 2024 to August 15, 2024.
According to a senior officer, the appointment of an Army Colonel of Para, High Altitude Warfare School, Gulmarg, as SSP in J&K Police for training and special operations is aimed to prepare JKP Cops for mountain and jungle warfare against highly trained Pakistan sponsored terrorists.
The High Altitude Warfare School in Gulmarg offers the Mountain Warfare course and the Winter Warfare course, which train personnel in High Altitude warfare, counter intelligence and survival skills. With the appointment of Colonel Prasher, similar warfare skills will be imparted to J&K Policemen involved in counter-insurgency operations.
The Home Department’s order for appointment of Colonel Prasher as SSP Training & Special Operations in J&K Police mentions the reference of letter number GJ/G-01/Creation/GOs/23/2024, dated 20-09-2024 from Police Headquarters, J&K and Wireless message, dated 18-09-2024 from Indian Army.
The appointment has been made on deputation basis with immediate effect and salary of the officer shall be drawn against deputation reserve post of J&K Police, read the order.
