Japan Airlines (JAL) has introduced a new clothing rental program that commenced on Wednesday. This initiative enables visitors traveling to Japan to travel light by offering them the opportunity to rent clothes from the airline upon arrival.
JAL, in collaboration with Sumitomo Corporation, a leading trading company in Japan, has launched the ‘Any Wear, Anywhere’ trial program. This program specifically targets individuals using JAL-operated flights who value the environmental benefits of such a service.
JAL stated in a press release that with the resurgence of air travel post-COVID-19 and the increasing focus on sustainability, there is a global movement to promote sustainable tourism. Travelers are increasingly seeking sustainable choices for various aspects of their trips, including their destinations, accommodations, and transportation. However, they often lack sufficient options when it comes to clothing, as they typically bring their own attire from home.
The motive behind JAL’s launch of this program is to provide travelers with the opportunity to access local clothing options, thereby transforming their travel and business trips into more sustainable experiences.
The clothing available for rent will be sourced by the airline from surplus apparel stock and pre-owned garments, promoting the concept of a circular economy.
JAL plans to monitor changes in passengers’ checked-in baggage weight to assess the reduction in carbon dioxide emissions resulting from the decreased aircraft weight due to the use of this service.
So, how does this new program work? Passengers bound for Japan can make clothing reservations through the “Any Wear, Anywhere” reservation site up to one month prior to their scheduled visit. According to JAL, the rented clothes must be returned within two weeks of the pickup date.
Visitors can browse the available stock on the reservation page and select clothing suitable for their purpose of visit and the current season. They will need to provide their flight booking number, pickup and return dates, destination for pickup, and make the necessary payment.
To facilitate convenient travel with minimal luggage, JAL will arrange for the delivery and pickup of rented clothing from the passengers’ hotels.
The trial program is scheduled to run for 14 months, until August 31, 2024.
Under this program, travelers can book casual and smart casual attire for both men and women, suitable for all seasons.
The prices for clothing rentals start at approximately $28.
