Jammu and Kashmir: JD(U) President GM Shaheen Urges Election Commission to Change PDP and NC Symbols

Srinagar, September 4, 2024 – GM Shaheen, President of the Janata Dal (United), has formally requested the Election Commission of India to change the electoral symbols of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the National Conference (NC) in a bid to ensure transparent voting in Jammu and Kashmir. In his appeal, Shaheen criticized the NC and PDP for their roles in the region’s unrest and violence since 1989, alleging that these parties have contributed to significant suffering in Kashmir.

Shaheen claimed that the NC’s actions in 1989 led to a “bloodshed” in Kashmir, while the PDP continued similar practices, turning the people of Kashmir into “pallet victims.” He also raised concerns about certain leaders from these parties, who he believes have backgrounds linked to terrorism and are reportedly intimidating voters.

In his appeal, Shaheen urged the Election Commission and the Government of India to closely monitor the assembly segments and consider banning candidates from the NC and PDP. He emphasized the need for stringent oversight to ensure that elections are conducted fairly and without coercion.
