On Saturday evening, an IndiGo flight heading towards Ahmedabad from Amritsar unintentionally veered close to Lahore in Pakistan before returning to Indian airspace within half an hour without any complications. The aircraft, traveling at a speed of 454 knots, reached the northern part of Lahore at around 7:30 pm. By 8:01 pm, it had safely returned to India, as reported by Pakistan’s news agency Dawn.
According to an IndiGo spokesperson speaking to news agency ANI, the flight briefly entered Pakistani airspace due to adverse weather conditions but successfully landed in Ahmedabad without any issues. The airline’s statement clarified that the deviation into Pakistani airspace over Attari was coordinated with Pakistan’s Amritsar Air Traffic Control (ATC) via telephone. The crew maintained continuous communication with Pakistan on radio/telephony (R/T) throughout the incident, ensuring the safe landing in Ahmedabad.
A senior official from Pakistan’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), as quoted by Dawn, emphasized that such deviations in bad weather conditions were not uncommon and internationally permitted.
On that Saturday, Pakistan experienced severe weather conditions, including heavy rainfall, strong winds, and thunderstorms, which resulted in unfortunate casualties with 34 people reported to have lost their lives in Bannu, Dikhan, Lakki Marwat, and Karak districts.
