India will not participate in the G-7 summit this year, as host country Canada has not sent an invitation to New Delhi. This is the first time since 2019 that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will stay away from this important global platform.
Canada did not send invitation
The G-7 summit will be held in Kananaskis, Alberta, Canada from June 15 to 17. Leaders of developed countries like the US, UK, France, Germany, Japan, Italy and Canada will participate in it. Canada has invited countries like Australia, Brazil, Mexico, South Africa and Ukraine this time, but India did not find a place in this list.
There has been no official statement from the Government of India on this, but sources say that no invitation has been received so far and the chances of this happening are also low.
Reason for tension in India-Canada relations?
Experts believe that the diplomatic tension between India and Canada for some time may be the main reason for this. In 2023, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused India of involvement in the killing of a Khalistani separatist, which India flatly rejected. India accused Canada of supporting radical groups.
Since then, relations between the two countries have cooled down and activities at the embassy level have also been limited.
Played an important role earlier
India is not a permanent member of the G-7, but in the last few years India was invited as a special invitee country and played an important role on issues like trade, climate change and global security. India’s absence is being seen as a lack of voice of the Global South (developing countries).
What is G-7?
G-7 i.e. “Group of Seven” is a group of the seven most developed economies of the world – Canada, US, UK, Germany, France, Italy and Japan. This group decides policies together on issues such as global economy, geopolitics and environment. Every year the host country specially invites some guest countries.
