India Braces for Another Active Phase of Southwest Monsoon, Heavy Rainfall Alert Issued

The India Meteorological Department announced on Sunday that amidst heavy rainfall and destructive floods in certain parts of India, another active phase of the southwest monsoon is expected to commence this week. The department issued a rainfall alert for several states, including flood-affected Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand, and others, cautioning about the likelihood of ‘heavy’ rainfall.

While some states have been grappling with heavy monsoon-induced floods and landslides, other regions in India have experienced a deficiency in rainfall over the past two weeks. M Mohapatra, the director general of the weather office, stated that a low-pressure area has formed, and another cyclonic circulation is expected to develop around Tuesday, leading to favorable conditions for substantial rainfall that could compensate for the rainfall deficit in the central and peninsular regions. Additionally, the western disturbance will continue to bring rain to northern India.

Here is the weather warning for states this week:

A low-pressure area has formed over northern Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, and Jharkhand, resulting in anticipated heavy and widespread rainfall in these regions over the next five days. The weather body specified that various districts of Odisha, including Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Nuapada, Kandhamal, Bolangir, Sonepur, Deogarh, Nabarangapur, Koraput, Malkangiri, Kalahandi, and Bargarh, would experience heavy rainfall for 24 hours starting today. Furthermore, on Tuesday, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangapu, Jagatsinghpur, Khordha, Puri, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, and Nuapada districts may receive very heavy rainfall.

Himachal Pradesh, which has been severely impacted by the monsoon havoc, is unlikely to see relief soon. The state is expected to experience isolated heavy rainfall over the next five days, according to IMD. Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, and East Rajasthan will also encounter similar weather conditions over the next three days.

Haryana-Chandigarh is likely to witness heavy rainfall in the next 24 hours. Meanwhile, Delhi, which is facing flooding in certain areas, can expect generally cloudy skies with light rain and thundershowers today.

Bihar, West Bengal, and Sikkim will continue to experience isolated heavy rainfall today.

Central India is predicted to have “isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall over Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha on July 17 and 18, and over Chhattisgarh today,” as stated by IMD.

IMD also mentioned that isolated ‘heavy to very heavy’ rainfall is anticipated over Konkan and Goa from July 18 to 21. Moreover, Gujarat and central Maharashtra will witness heavy showers in isolated pockets until July 21. Isolated thunderstorms and lightning are also expected in the region until July 17.

Assam, which is currently facing severe floods, will continue to experience heavy rainfall today. Similar weather conditions are expected in Meghalaya and Tripura.

In southern India, the weather body forecasts “light to moderate scattered to fairly widespread rainfall with isolated heavy rainfall very likely over Coastal Karnataka until July 21.”Telangana will also witness widespread rainfall until July 20, as will Andhra Pradesh and Kerala from July 18 to 20.
