Imran under arrest: Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan was convicted in the Toshakhana case on Saturday and sentenced to three years in prison. The court also slapped a fine of Rs 1,00,00 on Khan.

An Islamabad trial court on Saturday declared PTI Chairman Imran Khan guilty of ‘corrupt practises’ in the Toshakhana case and sentenced him to three years in prison,” the Dawn reported.

The Toshakhana is a government department in charge of handling costly gifts given to government officials. Khan was accused of failing to reveal gifts given to Toshakhana. It was also claimed that some of these presents were sold in an illegal manner. Khan has now been found guilty and sentenced to three years in jail in the case.

However, between 2018 and 2022, Imran Khan refused to declare the details of the gifts he got from various countries, including China, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Qatar. He is also accused of selling some of the gifts in the market without submitting them to the Toshakhana and profiting from the earnings.

Imran Khan’s lawyers have stated that they will appeal the verdict to the Supreme Court. They stated Imran Khan lawfully got the presents and used them for public welfare and development projects. They further claimed that the case was politically motivated and intended to undermine Imran Khan’s popularity and accomplishments.

Imran Khan is the latest Pakistani Prime Minister to be sentenced in a corruption case. Nawaz Sharif, Shehbaz Sharif, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, and Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy were all imprisoned before Khan on various accusations.
