PM at G20 Ministers’ meeting: Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Saturday that India’s 850 million internet users had some of the lowest data costs in the world, showing the extent, speed, and scope of the country’s digital revolution. In a video message to the G20 Digital Economy Ministers meeting in Bengaluru, the prime minister praised the beginning of the Digital India programme in 2015 for India’s digital transformation over the last nine years.
He mentioned using technology to transform governance and used Aadhaar as an example. He also addressed the JAM trinity of Jan Dhan bank accounts, Aadhaar, and Mobile, as well as shed information on the Direct Benefits Transfer, which plugs leakages in the system.
“Completely digitized taxation systems promote transparency and e-governance,” he added.
PM Modi was particularly pleased that the working group is developing a G20 virtual Global Digital Public Infrastructure Repository and emphasized that progress on the Common Framework for Digital Public Infrastructure will contribute to the creation of a transparent, responsible, and equitable digital ecosystem for all.
Earlier today, Prime Minister Modi hailed the achievement of breaking the 50-crore mark in Jan Dhan accounts as an important milestone.
According to a statement issued by the Union Finance Ministry on Friday, around 67% of these accounts have been opened in rural and semi-urban areas.
It is considered a big milestone. “It’s heartening to see that more than half of these accounts belong to our Nari Shakti,” Modi added. With 67% of accounts established in rural and semi-urban areas, we are also ensuring that the advantages of financial inclusion reach every corner of our country.”
