A 21-year-old engineering student allegedly took his own life by hanging in his dormitory room at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi on Friday evening, as reported by the police.

The student, identified as Anil Kumar, was enrolled in the B.Tech program in Mathematics and Computing with the session spanning from 2019 to 2023. He resided in the Vindhyachal Hostel within the institute, according to a senior police officer.

The incident came to light when it was reported to the Kishangarh Police Station at approximately 6 pm.

It was disclosed that Kumar was required to vacate the hostel room in June as per the institute’s regulations. However, due to difficulties in passing certain subjects, he had been granted a six-month extension to complete his coursework, stated the officer.

Emergency services had to forcibly enter the room, which was locked from the inside, with the presence of the dean of students/CMO of IIT, the chief security officer, and crime and forensic teams during this process.

At this stage, no evidence of foul play has been uncovered. The police are currently conducting inquest proceedings.
