Around 200 two-wheelers parked at the Varanasi railway station were reduced to ashes after a major fire broke out in the parking yard designated for railway employees.
The fire, believed to have been caused by a short circuit, quickly spread through the densely packed motorcycles at the Cantonment Railway Station in Varanasi on late Friday night.
Despite the prompt response from the fire brigade and railway police, the damage was extensive. All 200 bikes are believed to belong to railway staff, although the rescue team managed to save a few.Eyewitnesses mentioned that a short circuit occurred around 10.30 pm. Electricity workers arrived to fix it, but another short circuit occurred a few hours later. This second incident caused sparks to ignite petrol in one of the motorcycles, triggering the fire. The employees pointed out that if the railway station had its own fire station, the flames could have been contained before causing such extensive damage.
Senior Railway Police Officer Kunwar Pratap Singh confirmed that approximately 200 motorcycles were burned and stated that a further investigation will be conducted.
