Heavy rain batters South Indian cities, Hyderabad, Chennai most affected

At a time when the monsoon generally starts retreating, the south Indian cities of Hyderabad and Chennai experienced heavy rainfall, causing severe waterlogging and disruptions to daily life.

In Hyderabad, areas like Jubilee Hills and Banjara Hills received substantial rainfall, with recorded measurements of over 70 mm and 65 mm, respectively. The Disaster Relief Force received 32 complaints related to the waterlogging crisis that wreaked havoc in multiple parts of the city.

The weather department has issued a yellow alert for the northern districts of Telangana, including Jagtial, Asifabad, Mancherial, Peddapalli, Nizamabad, Nirmal, Karimnagar, Kamareddy, Adilabad, Sircilla, among others, indicating the likelihood of further heavy rainfall and potential flooding.

Meanwhile, the outskirts of Chennai were inundated following torrential rainfall, bringing the city to a standstill. Commuters traveling through areas like Tambaram and Velachery encountered difficulties as roads were submerged in knee-deep water. Erode also experienced heavy rains, resulting in severe waterlogging in the region.

The regional meteorological center in Chennai has forecast moderate rainfall on Tuesday in 21 districts, including Chennai and its surrounding areas. The authorities and residents in affected regions remain vigilant, managing the aftermath of heavy rainfall and waterlogging incidents that have disrupted daily life.
