Haiti gang opens fire 7 dead: At least seven people killed in Haiti on Saturday when a rally led by a Christian church leader was attacked with machine guns by a gang that rules a northern neighborhood of the country’s capital, Port-au-Prince.
At least 10 deaths were reported by the local media, Gedeon Jean predicted a greater final toll while also mentioning that other people were injured and several churchgoers had been abducted.
Videos posted on X, the site formerly known as Twitter, showed over 100 people marching in the suburb of Canaan while many were donning yellow shirts belonging to Pastor Marco’s religious movement and others were brandishing clubs and machetes.
Unverified social media videos show people being fired at in the street, bodies laying on the ground, and others who look to be hostages claiming they believed the march was peaceful and were unaware it was intended to take down the gang.
Many Haitians have joined civilian self-defense groups known as “Bwa Kale,” a movement that has inspired hope but also sparked retaliation against civilians and stirred fears the groups are spurring on the violence.
