Baramulla, 31 May, (Gulistan News): The residents of Gundibrahim village in Tehsil Pattan of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district are grappling with everyday hardships due to the absence of a bridge over the flood spill channel. This vital link would connect their village to Daslipora, Naidkhai and Sumbal Bandipora.
Currently, villagers rely on private boats to navigate the channel, incurring a fee of ₹20 per trip. This not only places an economic strain on the community but also subjects them to considerable danger, particularly during adverse weather conditions such as heavy rains and floods.
“Students and other commuters struggle immensely. Tragically, there have been instances of young lives lost in the channel. A permanent solution is urgently needed,” said Ghulam Mohammad, a concerned local.
The situation was briefly alleviated when a footbridge was installed. However, it was swept away by flash floods, plunging the residents back into their predicament.
Another resident expressed that villagers now have to transport vehicles like motorcycles and scooters on boats. This makeshift arrangement further highlights the community’s dire need for reliable connectivity. Essential activities like accessing education, healthcare and marketplaces remain disrupted.
Residents have appealed to the administration to construct a permanent bridge to address these challenges and ensure safety for the population.
