Grammys: Shankar Mahadevan, Zakir Hussain’s band Shakti bags Global Music Album

The fusion band, Shakti featuring John McLaughlin, Zakir Hussain, vocalist Shankar Mahadevan, percussionist V Selvaganesh and violinist Ganesh Rajagopalan became Global Music Album Winner at the Grammy Awards, held at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, on February 5.

The reassembled international fusion ensemble Shakti has clinched the prestigious award of Best Global Music Album for their latest release, ‘This Moment’. This marks a significant milestone as it is the group’s first new album in over 45 years. The album boasts eight new compositions by the talented lineup comprising John McLaughlin (guitar, guitar synth), Zakir Hussain (tabla), Shankar Mahadevan (vocalist), V Selvaganesh (percussionist), and Ganesh Rajagopalan (violinist).

Facing stiff competition at the Grammys from artists like Susana Baca, Bokante, Burna Boy, and Davido, Shakti emerged victorious, securing the Grammy for Best Global Music Album. This triumph underscores their enduring influence and global acclaim for their distinctive musical fusion.
