Delay on demand for import licences for laptops and tablets

Delay on demand: The Centre decided on Friday to postpone the implementation of the licensing requirement for laptops, tablets, and personal computers until November 1, 2023. Importing such items would require a valid limited import license after November 1.

The government said on Thursday that a licensing requirement for importing laptops, tablets, and personal computers would be implemented immediately. However, the decision has been reconsidered, and the implementation date has been pushed back to provide stakeholders more time to adjust to the new regulations.

This is a partial overturn of the Thursday surprise decision to enforce the licensing requirement with immediate effect, which had led to requests for a postponement. The decision to postpone the licensing requirement creates a chance for industry stakeholders to engage with the government, express their concerns, and explore potential solutions to guarantee a seamless transition.

According to the government, the limits were established for security concerns as well as to stimulate indigenous manufacture. According to officials, the action will also reduce inbound shipments of these goods from countries such as China and Korea, as well as allow the Centre to keep a close eye on the places from which the products are coming.

Union Information Technology Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar stated that the action was intended to “ensure trusted hardware and systems” and reduce reliance on imports.
