Users using Android smartphones in India can now access Google Wallet through the Google Play Store. The program, which is now being released in stages, allows users to conduct contactless purchases using debit and credit cards by securely tokenizing and storing them. This process either generates a virtual card or substitutes a real card number with a unique code.
Besides, Google Wallet also acts as a digital wallet app, which can store gift cards, gym memberships, event tickets, flight tickets, and more.
In India, Google Wallet is a separate app from Google Pay. Google Wallet can only be used to make contactless payments with credit or debit cards, in contrast to Google Pay, which provides UPI payment services. Furthermore, only handsets that enable near-field communication (NFC) will be able to use Google Wallet. Google will keep providing the Google Pay and Google Wallet apps in India, according to tech sources, in order to serve various user bases.
Users with eligible WearOS-powered smartwatches can also download the Wallet app on their smartwatch to make contactless payments directly from the watch. We were able to install the Google Wallet app on the Galaxy S23 Ultra and the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic LTE and load a credit card.
