The Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu has raised an alarm over the increasing presence of suspicious elements on its premises, allegedly targeting poor patients and their attendants for theft. The administration has instructed security guards to take stringent measures against these individuals.
“It has come to the administration’s attention that many suspicious elements are roaming the premises with the aim of robbing poor and innocent patients and their attendants through pickpocketing,” Dr Narinder Bhatial, Medical Superintendent of GMC Jammu told some news organizations . “Our security and police staff are aware of these incidents and remain vigilant. They have been directed to identify and act against individuals loitering without purpose.”
This decision follows numerous incidents where patients and their families have reported thefts, prompting the administration to bolster security measures. The hospital has increased surveillance and instructed security personnel to be particularly watchful of anyone acting suspiciously.
In a related incident, the GMC administration recently formed a fact-finding committee to investigate allegations of misconduct by a security guard towards an elderly woman. The woman had accused the guard of misbehaviour while she was on the hospital premises.
Dr Bhatial explained, “The GMC administration investigated the matter by reviewing CCTV footage and taking statements from the security staff on duty at the time. The investigation revealed that the woman was found wandering the hospital premises without any clear reason. When questioned by security personnel, she caused a disturbance. The security staff asked her to leave the premises firmly but respectfully. At no point was there any inappropriate conduct or threats made by the security personnel.”
