Rahul Gandhi was sentenced to two years in jail by a court in a 2019 criminal defamation case. After this he was disqualified from the membership of the Lok Sabha.
Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) president Ghulam Nabi Azad on Sunday termed the disqualification of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi from the Lok Sabha as wrong and said that it is not a good sign for democracy.
Rahul Gandhi was sentenced to two years in jail by a Surat court in a 2019 criminal defamation case. After this he was disqualified from the membership of the Lok Sabha.
Azad, a former Congress leader, told reporters on the sidelines of a function in Kathua district, “I am against it, be it Rahul Gandhi or Lalu Prasad Yadav or any other MP or MLA.” This is wrong. It is against natural justice that on one hand the judge has given the verdict and on the other hand the MP or MLA has been disqualified.”
He said, ‘The first rule was that he would not be disqualified until the final court sentenced him. This is not good for democracy. He said, ‘First Lalu Prasad Yadav was disqualified and now Rahul Gandhi.
In this way, the entire Parliament and Assemblies will be empty. He said, ‘There should be a different standard for political leaders.’
Meanwhile, Azad while addressing a public meeting in Barnoti said that the claim of the Jammu and Kashmir administration that it is creating ample employment opportunities for the youth is completely wrong.
He said that the administration is snatching their land from the local people. He said, ‘If our party comes to power, we will ensure that jobs and land are protected for the local people. We will pass a law in the state assembly to prevent outsiders from buying land and getting jobs here.
