Genelia D’Souza has had a career spanning two decades and has appeared in several films, but the one that holds a special place in the hearts of the audience is undoubtedly “Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na.” As the romantic cult film celebrates its 15th anniversary, Genelia reflects on its enduring appeal, attributing it to the film’s “casualness, simplicity, heartfelt emotions, and soulful songs” that deeply resonated with people, leading to their enjoyment of it. Portraying the character of Aditi ‘Meow’ Mahant, the actress acknowledges that while every filmmaker aims to create a relatable film, some connections become personal, with “Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na” capturing the experiences and emotions of many young individuals.
Revisiting the past, the 35-year-old actress recalls some interesting details, including the rigorous audition process she underwent to secure the role. Despite making her portrayal of Aditi appear effortless, Genelia reveals that she had to go through three screen tests before finally being cast. Additionally, there was a month of readings and spending time together, which greatly contributed to the natural chemistry among the cast.
During the auditions, another girl was shortlisted for the lead role opposite Imran Khan, who played Jai Singh Rathore. Genelia mentions that Imran initially felt more comfortable with the other girl. However, when he saw their scenes together on screen, he realized the on-screen chemistry between him and Genelia was remarkable, making it seem like they had been best friends forever.
Although Imran Khan has retired from acting, Genelia emphasizes that they still maintain a strong bond and regularly catch up, especially since their children attend the same school.
A notable aspect of the film is that approximately 80% of it was shot during nighttime. Director Abbas Tyrewala believed that love often blossoms in the darkness, which influenced the decision to primarily film during the night. The cast and crew would wrap up their shoots at 6 am, embracing the night and hoping to avoid daylight. Apart from two songs, “Kabhi Kabhi Aditi Zindagi” and “Nazre Milaana,” most of the scenes in the movie are set during the night. Genelia fondly remembers that despite their fatigue, the entire unit would dance to the film’s songs after wrapping up each morning shoot.
Reflecting on her character, Genelia mentions that she could strongly relate to Aditi during the filming period. Aditi was a spirited individual who expressed her emotions freely, and Genelia portrayed her naturally without relying on heavy makeup. However, she clarifies that she has evolved and is now different from Aditi, as she has learned to think before speaking. As a mother of two, Genelia acknowledges that the film has now achieved classic status, but at the time of its release, she had little awareness of its impact and significance.
