Srinagar, 25 May (Gulistan News): A grieving family from Pampore in Pulwama district staged a protest outside Paras Hospital Srinagar on Saturday, alleging medical negligence caused the death of their relative, Waseem Ahmed Pathan.

Waseem, a resident of Bilal Colony was admitted to the hospital eight days ago for treatment of an intestinal infection. After undergoing surgery to remove a cyst, he was discharged but complained of severe pain the following day. Doctors reportedly informed his family that an intestinal injury from the first surgery required a second operation.
Tragically, Waseem passed away earlier this morning.

His family accused the attending doctor of charging Rs 2.5 lakh for treatment but failing to provide proper care. “This is not negligence; it’s murder. We demand strict action against the doctor and hospital administration,” said Waseem’s brother during the protest. He further urged the public to avoid Paras Hospital, calling it a “slaughterhouse,” and appealed to the government to shut it down. The protestors demanded a thorough investigation and punishment for those responsible.

In response to the allegations, Paras Hospital issued a statement, expressing deep sorrow over Waseem’s demise. The hospital claimed that Waseem had been treated for carcinoma of the left colon and was discharged in stable condition. He returned in critical condition three days later due to severe abdominal pain and internal bleeding, which led to cardiac arrest and subsequent death despite medical efforts. The hospital added that Waseem had a history of psychiatric illness and extended condolences to his family.

Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Srinagar assured that the matter is being taken seriously. “We are forming a committee to investigate the incident. A preliminary report has been requested from the Zonal Medical Officer and will be submitted to the committee for further action,” the CMO said.

SHO Ram Munshi Bagh confirmed morning commotion at the hospital but stated no formal complaint had been received yet. “We are monitoring the situation and expect a complaint to be filed soon,” the SHO added.

Health Minister Sakina Itoo stated that the cause of death must be established before any further action is taken. “We will determine if it was due to negligence or natural causes through a thorough investigation,” she said.

Meanwhile, Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Kokernag cancelled Paras Hospital’s medical camp scheduled for May 26, citing public outrage and fresh allegations of negligence.

The family has appealed to authorities to ensure justice for Waseem, stressing that accountability is necessary to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
