Elon Musk is doing the unthinkable: he is removing a critical feature that might protect users from harassment on X, formerly known as Twitter. Musk will soon remove the option to block users on the social media site because he believes it is counterproductive.
Musk in a reply to a tweet on X said, “Block is going to be deleted as a “feature”, except for DMs”. He doesn’t like this feature and has talked about it before. Musk said that they will remove the block feature, except for direct messages. He posted that this change doesn’t make sense. Reacting to Musk’s post, former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, supported Musk’s decision. He in turn suggested that there should be a mute option only.
Musk has already stated that he dislikes blocking. In June, he proposed that Twitter replace blocking with a more powerful tool to silence someone. He also complained about people building extensive lists of people to block and blocking a large number of people that pay for Twitter Blue. However, Musk has a history of breaking promises, so we’ll have to wait and see if this shift actually occurs.
The Mute function will remain. However, the functions of Block and Mute are significantly different. Block prevents other users from contacting you, viewing your posts, or becoming your follower. Mute merely prevents them from seeing your posts. People are unaware when you have muted them. Musk also adds that the block feature for direct communications would remain
If Musk disables the block feature, it might cause major problems for high-profile accounts like as celebrities and politicians. They will be subjected to unwarranted hatred on the platform, over which they will have no influence.
