“Apropos previous press release regarding Election Helpline Number “8899868589” established at Police Control Room Kashmir, it is further informed that the number will primarily function to mitigate the potential threat posed by objectionable messages circulated through various social media platforms,” police spokesperson said.
He said the Election Commission has issued directives to combat the dissemination of objectionable messages that violate election laws and the model code of conduct. Recipients of such objectionable messages can forward the content along with the sender’s details on the Election Helpline Number “8899868589”.
He also said that upon receiving forwarded messages, J&K Police Kashmir Zone will promptly initiate inquiries to trace the original senders and appropriate legal action will be taken under the relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code, Representation of the People Act, 1951, Conduct of Election Rules, 1961, and any other applicable laws, in accordance with instructions and directions issued by the Election Commission.
Police added that these measures aim to curb the spread of misinformation and maintain the sanctity of the electoral process.
J&K Police Kashmir Zone urges all citizens to cooperate in this endeavour by promptly reporting any instances of objectionable messages related to the election.
