Previously, the Indian government controlled petrol and diesel prices, revising them every 15 days. However, in 2014, the Centre de-regulated fuel rates, and since 2017, prices have been revised on a daily basis.
The determination of fuel prices lies in the hands of oil companies, overseen by the petroleum planning and analysis cell of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.
Fuel prices are determined based on factors such as exchange rates, global prices, tax structures, and other relevant considerations.
Petrol prices in different states are subject to VAT charged by the respective state governments. Since each state has its own VAT rates, pricing may vary.
