Dumper driver passes away of in Kounserbal

A driver passed away when he suffered an electric shock while unloading sand from his dumper at Kounserbal area of Damhal Hanjipora in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Friday (May 10).

Locals have claimed negligence on the part of the Power Development Department (PDD).

An official told a news agency that a dumper driver identified as Showkat Ahmad Parray, son of Abdul Hameed Parray, a resident of Yadder Pulwama, received an electric shock while unloading sand at Kounserbal.

“The dumper driver died on the spot. His body is lying at SDH DH Pora,” the official said.

Meanwhile, Police have taken cognizance of the incident, he added.

However, the locals alleged negligence on the part of PDD, stating that transmission lines are lying low, posing a big jeopardy to lives.

They appealed the higher authorities to look into the matter to prevent such incidents in the future.

Electrocution is death or severe injury caused by electric shock from electric current passing through the body. The word is derived from “electro” and “execution”, but it is also used for accidental death.

The term “electrocution” was coined in 1889 in the US just before the first use of the electric chair and originally referred to only electrical execution and not other electrical deaths. However, since no English word was available for non-judicial deaths due to electric shock, the word “electrocution” eventually took over as a description of all circumstances of electrical death from the new commercial electricity.

According to a report by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), an alarming total of 4,287 lives were tragically lost due to road accidents from 2018 to 2022 in J&K. The report reveals 984 lives were consumed by road accidents.
