DIPR Kargil organizes one-day journalist workshop

Department of Information & Public Relations (DIPR), Kargil today organized a “One-Day Journalist Workshop” for media persons of Kargil District as part of a series of events of the department.

Chairman/CEC, LAHDC, Kargil, Feroz Ahmad Khan was the chief guest, Joint Director, Information, Ladakh, Imteeaz Kacho, Assistant Director Information, Kargil, Padma Angmo, Field Publicity Officer, Central Bureau of Communications, Andhra Pradesh (former Head, Regional News Unit, Doordarshan, Leh) Ramesh Chandra and Independent Journalist, (Former Senior Editor, Times Now Navbharat, Aaj Tak,Star TV, India TV), Meenakshi Kandwal attended the workshop physically. On the other hand, Former Senior Broadcast Journalist, Zaheer Bagh and Editor & Founder of Stawa Magazine, Sunetro Ghosal attended the workshop virtually and interacted with participants.

President, Ladakh Press Club, Kargil, Mohammad Hussain Khalo, Senior Assistant DIPR-Kargil, Mohd Yousuf, Assistant Exhibition-cum-Cultural Officer, DIPR Kargil, Mohammad Musa, Editor, Reporters, Photographers, staff of DIPR-Kargil, Correspondent, AIR-Kargil, local journalists working with print, electronic and online media, staff of NIC Kargil besides others also attended the workshop.

In his inaugural speech, the CEC congratulated Commissioner/Secretary, DIPR-Ladakh, Padma Angmo, Joint Director, Information, Ladakh, Assistant Director, Information Kargil and staff of DIPR Kargil for their endeavours in running the department effectively.

Khan also appreciated the efforts of DIPR-Kargil and said the department has been playing a pivotal role in the dissemination of information in the district.

He hailed DIPR-Kargil for organizing such a productive workshop for the journalists. The CEC advised the media persons to take benefit from the workshop and hoped that such workshops should be held in future as well.

Explaining the role of media in society, he said media is the fourth pillar of democracy and it acts as a bridge between the Government and the general public.

While talking about fake news, Khan said it is the need of the hour to counter fake news. He impressed upon journalists to dig deep into the stories while reporting which will be helpful to counter fake news.

In his welcome speech, Joint Director, Information, Ladakh, Imteeaz Kacho highlighted the perspective of Ladakh media and the endeavours of DIPR- Kargil.

He said under the supervision of Commissioner/Secretary, DIPR-Ladakh, Padma Angmo, the department has scaled great heights of progress adding that there is no looking back since she took charge way back in 2021.

Kacho also highlighted the achievements of DIPR-Kargil including the bi-monthly magazine Kargil Nama headed by Padma Angmo with the editorial supervision of its Editor, Mansoor Peer and also hailed the coverage of different events by the department.

The Joint Director congratulated the media fraternity of Kargil and their enthusiastic work for the coverage of news across the remote areas of the district.

Kacho said the department is committed for extending support for promising and hardworking media persons of the district. He said it is imperative to ensure the welfare of accredited media persons for which the process of formulating a “Journalist Welfare Scheme” is under way.

He said such capacity-building programmes will be organized in future as well. He said resource persons had a productive interaction and hoped that the workshop will help to enhance and upgrade the skills of journalists working in the district.

In the morning session, Ramesh Chandra talked about public news broadcasting scenario–National and Ladakh perspectives. He explained the detailed history of public news broadcasting in Ladakh. Ramesh also shared his experiences and talked about the career and scope of public broadcasting in Ladakh.

Later, Editor & Founder of Stawa Magazine, Sunetro Ghosal, who joined the workshop virtually, spoke at length about the challenges of journalism in Ladakh.

Former Senior Broadcast Journalist and former Chief Cameraman, India Today, Zaheer Bagh joined virtually and explained the pros and cons of broadcast journalism and shared his experiences in the broadcast media industry. He also talked about the technological interventions which have exponentially changed the media scenario in the country.

A question and answer session was also held after his virtual talk during which Zaheer answered the questions of the participating media persons in an interactive way.

In the afternoon session, Independent Journalist, Meenakshi Kandwal in an interactive session spoke about taping new media and how to nurture critical readership/viewership.

She also spoke at length about ethics of broadcast journalism and storytelling. She gave on spot training to journalists about how to report a story for the broadcast journalism.

Meenakshi said in the age of super information it is important to learn how to create creative content to connect the readers by using new platforms including YouTube. She also talked in detail about the challenges of media.

Further, she displayed some of her video stories that she reported in the past from different parts of the country in order to show participants the ways of independent and ethical reporting.

The Independent Journalist also shared various tips of effective storytelling in broadcast journalism. Her session was also followed by a question and answer session and discussion on national and Ladakh media.

The whole workshop focussed on sensitization and capacity building of journalists from Kargil while the role of media in development journalism was also discussed threadbare.

While giving feedback, he said the workshop was an opportunity for journalist to learn different techniques of print, electronic and multi-media reporting.

He appreciated the role of private media in the dissemination of information and hoped that DIPR-Kargil will organize such events in future as well to improve the skills of journalists.

In the end AD, Information, Kargil, Padma Angmo presented the vote of thanks to the chief guest, Joint Director, Information, Ladakh, guest speakers, participants, staff of DIPR Kargil, local journalists, employees of NIC Kargil for attending the productive workshop and making it successful.

Later, the staff of DIPR-Kargil, local journalists also thanked Commissioner/Secretary, DIPR, Ladakh, Padma Angmo, Joint Director, Information, Ladakh and AD, Information, Kargil for organizing the workshop and hoped that such brainstorming workshops should be organized in the future as well.
