Lok Sabha: The Delhi services bill, officially known as the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill, 2023, will be tabled in Parliament on Tuesday. According to the revised list of business for Tuesday, Home Minister Amit Shah will introduce the bill while his deputy Nityanand Rai will make a statement on the reasons for bringing an “immediate legislation” by promulgating the ordinance.
The bill was expected to be introduced in the Lok Sabha on Monday. However, due to the disruptions in the House over Manipur violence, it could not be tabled.
If passed in both houses, Delhi services bill will replace an existing ordinance that overrides a Supreme Court order giving the Delhi government control over most services. The ordinance has been a major flashpoint between Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Centre.
Arvind Kejriwal’s AAP, which is a part of the opposition coalition I.N.D.I.A, has reacted strongly against the ordinance. The Congress and other opposition parties have also come out against the ordinance that snatches power of transfer and posting of officials from Delhi government.
Around 109 MPs, comprising of those from the 26-member Opposition bloc and some independents like Kapil Sibal, are expected to vote against the bill, sources told news agency PTI. Apart from this, discussion on the Manipur issue in the Rajya Sabha which began on Monday will continue on Tuesday. Since the beginning of the Monsoon Session, the Opposition has been demanding a statement from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to initiate a discussion on Manipur.
