Delhi Service Act approval: The Delhi Services Act was signed into law by President Droupadi Murmu. On August 1, Union Home Minister Amit Shah introduced the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill, 2023, in Lok Sabha. The measure is intended to replace the disputed Ordinance on Service Control in the National Capital.

On August 7, it was then passed in the Rajya Sabha. The law, which gives the central government control over bureaucrats in the national capital, was approved by the Upper House with 131 votes in favour and 102 votes against it.

The Bill proposes that the centre would have power over measures such as suspensions and investigations of national capital authorities. It was introduced in Parliament amid a ruckus in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha about the situation in Manipur.

The monsoon session of Parliament saw a contentious session after the government submitted a bill in parliament for control of services and officer posting in Delhi, which was opposed by the majority of opposition parties.

The Delhi Services Bill intended to replace the Centre’s Ordinance of May 19. The ordinance was released a week after the Supreme Court declared that the Delhi Government has authority over the administration and control of civil personnel, except in situations of public order, law enforcement, and land.

The AAP called the bill the most “undemocratic” piece of legislation ever introduced in Parliament.
