The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported that Delhi received 153 mm of rainfall between Saturday morning and Sunday morning, making it the third highest single-day rainfall for July in a 24-hour period. The IMD officials stated that this was the highest recorded rainfall in a 24-hour period since July 25, 1982, when the capital received 169.9 mm of rainfall. The highest-ever 24-hour rainfall in July was recorded on July 20, 1958, with 266.2 mm of rainfall. The rainfall over the weekend exceeded the 133.4 mm mark recorded on July 9, 2003. The IMD has issued a yellow alert and warned of moderate rain for Delhi on Sunday.

According to the Meteorological Department, rainfall below 15 mm is categorized as “light,” 15 mm to 64.5 mm as “moderate,” 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm as “heavy,” and 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm as “very heavy.”

The heavy rainfall on Sunday resulted in waterlogging throughout the city, causing damage to buildings in at least 15 locations. Parks, underpasses, markets, and even hospital premises were submerged due to the continuous morning rain. Additionally, strong winds and showers caused power and internet disruptions in various areas.

In Tibbiya College Society near Karol Bagh, a 58-year-old woman was killed when a ceiling collapsed on Saturday evening. On Sunday, another house collapsed in the Zakhira area, but two people were rescued by the Delhi Fire Services (DFS). The DFS received 15 calls reporting collapsed portions of several buildings across the city.

The IMD issued an “orange” alert for Saturday and a “yellow” alert for Sunday. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal stated that the city received 126 mm of rainfall in a 12-hour period, which accounts for 15% of the total rainfall during the monsoon season. Kejriwal has canceled the leave of all government officers and instructed them to inspect the severe waterlogging issues across the city.

Gurugram also experienced heavy waterlogging, prompting residents to stay indoors. The IMD has predicted moderate to heavy rainfall for Delhi on Sunday, with a cloudy sky, moderate rain, thundershowers, and the possibility of heavy rain at isolated places. The maximum temperature is expected to be around 30°C, while the minimum temperature will be 24°C.
