Delhi-bound Air India flight makes emergency landing

Air India flight AI106, operating from Newark in the United States to Delhi, India, was forced to make an emergency landing at Stockholm’s Arlanda airport on Monday, February 22, 2023. The Boeing 777-300ER aircraft was carrying nearly 300 passengers, who were all reported to be safe.

According to a senior official from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the flight experienced an oil leak in one of its engines, resulting in the engine being shut down. The official stated that the ground inspection is ongoing and that oil was seen coming out from the drain mast of engine two.

Upon detecting the technical issue, the flight was diverted to Stockholm, where a large number of fire engines were deployed at the airport in preparation for the aircraft’s emergency landing. The airline confirmed the incident and stated that the safety and well-being of its passengers and crew are of utmost priority.

This incident comes just a day after another Air India flight from New York to Delhi was diverted to London due to a medical emergency. The airline has not provided any further details about the medical emergency.

Air India has been facing financial troubles for several years, and the Indian government has been considering privatizing the airline to help alleviate its financial burden. However, incidents like these highlight the importance of maintaining the highest safety standards in the aviation industry.

Passenger safety remains a top priority, and the airline and the aviation authorities will undoubtedly conduct a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the oil leak and take necessary steps to ensure such incidents do not happen in the future.
