Defence Ministry likely to clear Indian Army’s proposal for acquiring light tanks

Seeking to tackle the Chinese threat, the Indian Army’s proposal for acquiring 354 light tanks under project Zorawar is going to be discussed by the Defence Ministry at a high-level meeting this week.

The Indian Army has issued specifications for its future light tank which has been named ‘Zorawar’. The project will be undertaken under Make in India. The Army proposed to acquire indigenous light tanks for quicker deployment and movement in high-altitude areas. The project would be discussed during the high-level meeting scheduled to be held later this week in South Block,” top sources told India Today. These tanks will be used to counter the Chinese deployment of a large number of similar armoured columns along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

An active protection system is designed to protect vehicles from anti-tank guided missiles and projectiles away from combat vehicles. The Army also wants the light tank to be amphibious, so it can be deployed across riverine regions, including the Pangong Tso Lake in Eastern Ladakh.
