A woman has allegedly took her own life in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kot Balwal area of Jammu city for not having a child on Thursday (April 18).
According to the report, the woman identified as Kamlesh resident of Kot Balwal committed suicide because she was childless.
The husband of the deceased Kamlesh apprised media that his wife took this extreme step as she was childless.
The woman’s body has been taken to Govt Medical College, Bakshi Nagar in Jammu city for medico-legal facilities.
Jammu and Kashmir Police records revealed a rise in suicide attempts in 2021, with 586 cases reported in the Valley in 2021, compared to 472 cases in 2020. The trend was highlighted also by data from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), which recorded 365 suicide attempts and 127 deaths between February 2021 and August 2022.
A report by the National Human Rights Commission of India on May 21, 2004, says that 20,000 people have attempted to die by suicide in the 14 years of socio-political unrest in Kashmir, from 1990 to 2004. Of these, 3,000 attempts resulted in death, mostly among those aged 16 to 25. Terrorism, closely followed by suicide, reportedly causes the highest number of deaths in Kashmir.
NCRB (2010) recorded 248 suicides in Jammu and Kashmir, while over 287 persons committed suicide in 2011 Clarify that NCRB refers to the National Crime Records Bureau. Suicide fatalities increased by 43.3% in J &K in 2012, when 417 people were reported to have ended their lives by committing suicide (NCRB, 2012). While the suicide rate in J & K is lower than the national average of 10.8 % per lakh people, it is a buzzing signal to reflect. A small number of people consider suicide as a spur of the moment, but for the majority, it is a deliberate act motivated by extended periods of despair or horrible circumstances.
