US Open 2023: On Tuesday night, Carlos Alcaraz’s quest to retain his men’s singles title took an unexpected turn. Dominik Koepfer’s terrible ankle injury became the game’s deciding factor, forcing him to quit after an hour of play and ensuring Alcaraz’s progression to the next round with a score of 6-2, 3-2.
The Spaniard, who had wowed spectators with his incredible performance the previous year, expressed conflicting sentiments about his triumph. Alcaraz recognized Koepfer’s injuries and stated that it was not the best method to win the game. He praised his own form and performance on the court, though, and hopes to sustain the same level of play in the following rounds.
“It was a shame for him in the first game, he got injured with the ankle,” Alcaraz said post-match. “Obviously that’s not the best way to get through to another round. But I have to say for myself that I was playing great, I was playing really well on court. Hopefuly I can keep the same level in the next round.”
“This is a court that I love playing in,” Alcaraz said of the iconic Ashe stage. “Since the first step on the court [tonight] I felt great, I felt amazing—the same energy that I felt last year. It was a great start to the match and I think I played and I felt really well during the match.”
As the tournament develops, Alcaraz’s world No. 2 ranking will be surpassed by Novak Djokovic, which might be painful. Alcaraz, on the other hand, has the chance to ease the impact by winning his second US Open title.
