Srinagar, June 10 (Gulistan News) : Education Minister Sakina Masood Itoo on Tuesday said that the Cabinet Sub-Committee formed to examine the reservation policy in Jammu and Kashmir has completed its work and finalized the report within six-month deadline.
In a post on X, she stated, “The Cabinet Sub Committee constituted to examine the issue of reservations has drafted its report within the stipulated timeframe of six months. The report will be placed before the Cabinet when it meets.”
Controversy over reservations began after the 2023 amendments to the Reservation Act, which granted (ST) Scheduled Tribe status to communities like Padaris, Paharis, Kolis, and Gadda Brahmins. While the government termed the move “historic,” it sparked widespread protests from job asoirants, students and opposition leaders.
Protests intensified after the declaration of JKCCE 2023 Results and NEET-PG 2024 results, where many alleged a sharp drop in open merit selections. Students claimed the Open Merit quota had been reduced, violating the 50% limit set by the Supreme Court. Member Parliament Aga Ruhullah even led a protest outside the CM’s residence in Srinagar, joined by thousands of students. A petition challenging the revised reservation structure was also filed in the J&K High Court.
To address the concern government had formed the Cabinet Sub-Committee under Education Minister Sakina Itoo, which consulted various stakeholders. The report is now ready and will soon be reviewed by the Cabinet. (Gulistan News Tv)
