A plane crash near Brazil’s São Paulo has resulted in the deaths of all 61 people on board. The regional turboprop aircraft, operated by Voepass, was en route from Cascavel to São Paulo’s Guarulhos International Airport when it crashed into a residential area near Vinhedo, about 50 miles northwest of São Paulo, on Friday.
Video footage shared online showed the plane spinning out of control before crashing into trees near houses, followed by a large plume of smoke. Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva announced the tragic news at an event and called for a moment of silence for the victims.
Initially, Voepass reported 58 passengers and four crew members on board, but this was later corrected to 57 people. The cause of the crash is still unknown, and authorities have dispatched emergency teams to the scene. The aircraft involved was an ATR 72-500, identified by the registration PS-VPB.
