Blackout in uptown (HMT, UMERABAD, Chattabal) residents see no relief from power outages

The residents of uptown areas (HMT, Chattabal, of the summer capital Srinagar here on Friday expressed anguish against the Power Development Department (PDD) for failing to stick to the new curtailment schedule.

There seems to be no relief in sight for the residents of Kashmir facing electricity outages for the past several days, with the authorities citing the early onset of summer and sub-optimal hydro power generation as reasons for unscheduled power cuts.

The aggrieved residents told News that they were “expecting fewer power cuts after the department issued a fresh curtailment schedule last month.”

The residents claimed, “The power scenario has not been changed and we are still facing prolonged power cuts.”

Bashir Ahmad from HMT UMERABAD told that they are facing prolonged power cuts in this bone-chilling cold. “In absence of the power supply, we face inconvenience,” he said.

Kashmir is going through one of its worst power crisis as unscheduled and prolonged cuts in supply.

People in the valley complain that power supply often get disrupted at the time chilly winter.

During the day, the situation gets worse. We have never faced such a situation before,” Javid Ahmad, a resident of HMT, said.

Fayaz Ahmad, a resident of Chattabal said that “every winter, the power department is claiming load shedding as the reason for power cuts and every winter we are facing the same issues.”

He said the situation has not improved “despite the tall claims by the Power Development Department.The officials of the Power Development Department in turn blamed people for the illegal use of electricity.

The residents of the area complained that they are witnessing a power crisis this year. “The harsh winter is yet to arrive. We are apprehensive about what will be the situation like during the harsh forty-day period of cold in Chillai Kallan.”
