US President Joe Biden announced on Wednesday that he is “passing the torch to a new generation” to unite the country, as he addressed the nation for the first time since ending his re-election bid. At 81, Biden emphasized the importance of making space for younger voices, explaining his decision to step down and urging voters to defend the country’s democracy.
“I have decided the best way forward is to pass the torch to a new generation. That is the best way to unite our nation,” Biden said.
He stressed that his withdrawal from the presidential race was in defense of democracy, though he did not specifically mention Republican candidate Donald Trump, whom he has previously described as a threat to democracy. “I revere this office, but I love my country more. It’s been the honor of my life to serve as your President. But in the defense of democracy, which is at stake, it’s more important than any title,” Biden stated.
He called on Americans to unite in the cause of protecting democracy. Biden acknowledged that while he believes his accomplishments as President and his vision for the future justify a second term, ensuring the preservation of democracy takes precedence over everything else.
Despite drawing strength and joy from serving the American people, Biden noted that the sacred task of perfecting the union is about the citizens, their families, and their future, rather than about himself.
