Currently, there is a proliferation of scams circulating on WhatsApp, a messaging platform owned by Meta. Recently, the Cyber Police Crime Wing of Mumbai Police’s North Region issued a tweet urging WhatsApp users to exercise caution regarding a scam known as the Pink WhatsApp scam.
What is the Pink WhatsApp scam?
A viral message is being circulated on WhatsApp, enticing users to click on a link in order to download a pink version of the platform. However, this is a deceptive ploy that ultimately leads to the hacking of mobile phones. The Mumbai Police’s North Region cyber crime unit warns that this malware can result in the misuse of contact numbers and pictures stored on mobile devices, financial losses, the spread of spam messages, and the loss of control over the affected device.
Protecting yourself: To begin with, it is crucial to immediately uninstall the app from your mobile device. Navigate to Settings > Apps > WhatsApp (Pink) and delete the application. It is essential to verify the authenticity of any suspicious links received via WhatsApp.
Always download applications from reliable sources like Google Play or Apple’s App Store, as malicious links often originate from third-party platforms. Refrain from sharing personal or financial information with untrustworthy apps or sources on the internet.
Exercise caution when forwarding suspicious links or messages on social media platforms. Verify their credibility before spreading them further.
