Hearing on Article 370: A number of petitions opposing the repeal of Article 370 of the constitution, which granted special status to the former state of Jammu and Kashmir, are being heard by the Supreme Court. Daily hearings have been held by a five-judge panel led by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud. On August 2, the bench began considering a batch of appeals against the Centre’s August 5, 2019 judgement. This action was fiercely criticised by certain significant opposition parties but enthusiastically praised by those who support the BJP

The hearing would be held every day, with the exception of Mondays and Fridays, which are reserved for the highest court’s general hearings, according to the five-judge bench. On these days, only new petitions are accepted for admission hearings; ordinary matters are not heard.

It had designated two attorneys—one from the petitioners’ and the government’s sides—to compile the convenience compilation and submit it by July 27. It also stated that no materials would be accepted after that date.

In order to help the court rapidly understand the facts, a convenience note provides a summary of the entire case.

It had stated that the conditions in Jammu and Kashmir following the notification deleting Article 370 on August 5, 2019, would not be relevant to the constitutional question to be decided by the five-judge bench. On that day, the Centre divided the former state of Jammu and Kashmir into two union territories and removed it from its special status.
