Authorities close Mughal Road till weather improvement

Authorities on Saturday (April 27) closed Mughal road as the pathway is full of snow and the weather still needs an improvement so that the vehicular movement can be initiated.

DSP Traffic, Shopian said in a order, a copy of which Gulistan Tv possess, reads “Keeping in view, the inclement weather advisory from MET Department, it is requested to stop the movement of vehicles on Mughal Road from Hirpora onwards. More than 6 Inches of snow has accumulated near the premises of Pir-Ki-gali and is still snowing from Dubjan onwards. Due to this, there is every apprehension of occurrence of slip/slides and shooting stones on the road”

“Keeping in view the above fact and to avoid any untoward incident, you are requested to strictly stop the movement of vehicles till the improvement of weather and clearance of road”, the order further reads.

Mughal Road is the road between Bufliaz, a town in the Poonch district, to the Shopian district, in the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir, India. The 84-kilometre road traces a historic route used in the Mughal period over the Pir Panjal Pass, at an altitude of 3,500 m (11,500 ft), higher than the Banihal pass at 2,832 m (9,291 ft).

The road connects Poonch and Rajouri to Srinagar in the Kashmir valley, and reduces the distance between Shopian and Poonch from 588 km to 126 km. It also provides an alternative route into the Kashmir valley off the Jammu–Srinagar highway. The road passes through Buffliaz, Behramgalla, Chandimarh, Dogray (Dogran), Godawan, Poshana, Chattapani, Peer Ki Gali, Aliabad, Zaznar, Dubjian, Hirpora, and Shopian.

Rains lashed Jammu and Kashmir with the weather department on Saturday predicting more in the next few days.

A meteorological department official here told media that in last 24 hours till 8:30 am this morning, Srinagar received 4.5mm of rainfall, Qazigund 10.2mm, Pahalgam 20.8mm, Kupwara 15.1mm, Kokernag 9.8mm, Gulmarg 8.6mm, Jammu 2.3mm, Banihal 2.3mm, Batote 22.8mm, Katra 4.6mm and Bhadarwah 16.4mm.
