In a significant political development, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Atishi Marlena is set to be sworn in as the next Chief Minister of Delhi on Saturday, September 21, according to the party’s official announcement on Thursday. The swearing-in ceremony will mark the beginning of a new chapter in Delhi’s political landscape as Atishi takes over from outgoing Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
Change of Plans for the Swearing-In
Originally, AAP had planned for Atishi’s oath-taking ceremony to coincide with a special Assembly session on September 26-27. However, the date was moved to September 21 following a proposal by Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor.
Cabinet Composition
Initially, it was expected that only Atishi would take the oath, but recent reports indicate that her council of ministers will also be sworn in during the same event. Among those expected to continue in their ministerial roles are senior AAP leaders Gopal Rai, Kailash Gehlot, Saurabh Bharadwaj, and Imran Hussain, all of whom served in Arvind Kejriwal’s previous administration. In addition, two more AAP MLAs will be inducted into the new cabinet, adding fresh faces to the leadership team.
Atishi’s Rise to Leadership
Atishi, who is currently the lone woman minister in the Delhi cabinet and holds multiple portfolios, was unanimously chosen by AAP legislators to succeed Kejriwal. She represents the Kalkaji constituency and has played a crucial role in the Delhi government’s education reforms. Atishi has emerged as a central figure in the party, especially after the arrests of Kejriwal and his former deputy Manish Sisodia in connection with the alleged Delhi liquor policy scam.
A Critical Moment for Delhi
Atishi’s appointment comes just months before the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections, making her leadership crucial during this transitional period. With her extensive experience and strong educational background, Atishi is poised to steer the AAP government forward as it faces new challenges in the capital.
Her swearing-in on Saturday is expected to mark the beginning of a crucial phase, both for the AAP and Delhi’s governance, as she prepares to lead the party into the next electoral battle.
