Apple Plans Smart-Home Style Interface for iPhones in iOS 17 Update

Apple Inc. intends to introduce a fresh interface for iPhones in its upcoming iOS 17 software update. This interface will display various information, such as calendar appointments, weather updates, and notifications, in a manner resembling a smart-home display. The view will be activated when the iPhone is locked and positioned horizontally, providing added utility when the device is placed on a desk or nightstand.

This move is part of Apple’s broader strategy to incorporate real-time information into more aspects of its software, including the Apple Watch. The iOS 17 update, code-named Dawn, is scheduled for release later in 2023 and will be unveiled alongside Apple’s mixed-reality headset at the Worldwide Developers Conference in June. While Apple declined to comment on its plans for iOS 17, sources familiar with the project revealed that the new iPhone interface will feature a dark background with bright text for improved readability. It will expand on the lock screen widgets introduced in iOS 16, allowing users to view condensed snippets of information below the time on their screen. Additionally, Apple is exploring the concept of transforming its devices into smart-home displays, with ongoing efforts to develop a cost-effective tablet that can magnetically attach to walls and stands. This tablet would serve various purposes, such as controlling smart-home devices, displaying video, handling FaceTime conversations, and more. Other notable changes expected in iOS 17 include significant updates to the Wallet app, enhancements to location services, the introduction of a journaling app with social features, improvements to health-related features, the addition of the Health app to iPads, and upgrades to SharePlay and AirPlay functionalities.
